Connecting to sql server 2005

I want to connect to database using sql server 2005 through Visual web developer 2005 express edition . what will be the connection string for this....

keywords under * * are for your own variable.

connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\ *datafile name *.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

if it is a database in a local drive

and if you are using a web server ,

connectionString="data source=*ip address * ;user id=userid;password=pass"

The following link might help you..

In fact that is not the right explanation. The above mentioned syntax is used when you use the SQL Server 2005 Express feature of user instances. The above mentioned sample assumes that yxou have a local SQL Server Express instance (configured with the instance name of SQLEXPRESS). User instances are used to temporary attach datafile to SQL Server instances.

This has nothing to do with a web server. The above mentioned syntax is used when you have a SQL Server attached database. No matter which middle tier (either an application you wrote or a web server is connecting to the database server)=, you are able to have multiple conenctions from multiple applications to this database, other then the user instance where only one application can create a user instance and have access to the database at a time.

connecting to SQL Server 2000

hi all;
I have a SQL server ent. edition installed on windows 2003, I want to
register another SQL server instance installed on windows xp, in my
enterprise manager. When I try to do that i get the following error message.
"SQL server does not exists or access denied."
note that no domain controller is installed on the network.
What is reason, and how can i resolve it?
all ideas would be highly appreciated...
AnsariYou have to verify that :
1. you have nioo network problems , you can test sharing a folder on the XP
machine and access this share from Win2003
2. Verifiy that you have no accounts problems and permissions
3.verify thant services are really started on the xp machine
4. try to register xp server from Win2003 using the IP adresss first second
try with the netbios name .
5. activate the mixed security on the xp machine and try to register with SA
login .
I think that with these 5 tests you should fix the poblem

connecting to SQL express through VB

Hi all,

I have SQL server express edition 2005 installed on my computer and using VB in MS Access to run some queries. The VB function looks something like this..

Dim dataRS As New ADODB.Recordset
Dim cnnSQL As New ADODB.Connection

Set cnnSQL = New ADODB.Connection
cnnSQL.ConnectionString = "Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=.\SQLExpress;Database=TestDB;Trusted_Connection=yes;"

cnnSQL.Properties("Integrated Security").Value = "SSPI"
cnnSQL.Open

dataRS.Open "SELECT dbo_Table_1.* FROM dbo_Table_1", cnnSQL, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic

The code fails on the last line with message
"Invalid object name 'dbo_Table_1'"
(yes, I verified that the table actually does exist in the DB)

I must be doing something wrong with the connection string but all the things that I've tried so far haven't worked.. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Try providing the schema name for the table in your select statement, as in:

SELECT DBO.dbo_Table1.* FROM DBO.dbo_Table1

You schema may or may not be DBO, I just use that here as an example.

connecting to SQL DATABASE ENGINE

hello everybody!!!

I am very new to SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS EDITION

while connecting to DATABASE ENGINE i got this error message.....

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

any solution please?

Hi,

If you are trying on a local machine.

login properly :

server instance: computer_name\SQLSERVER_INSTANCE_NAME

user name : computer_name\user_name

If trying on a remote machine:

have a look in the following link:

http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx

Hope it'll help.

|||

this error is very common... You check whether the instance is configured for Remote connection

Start --Microsoft sql server 2005-- Configuration Tools -- SQL Server Surface Area Configuration -- Surface Area configuration for services and connections -- Select Remote Connection -- Select Local and remote connection Radio button and using both TCP/IP and named pipes

ALso check whether the firewall is enabled. if yes create exception for 1433 and 1434

Connecting to local SQL Server

Hi,

I am having problems connecting to databases on my local SQL Server, express edition from my website.

The following is the connection string i am using:

Database=MyDatabase;Server=COMP\SQLEXPRESS;User ID=sa;

The error I get is "Login failed for sa"

I have tried other users but no luck. Also, I cant seem to create a new user as I don't have administrators rights, any ideas how i can do this?

Any ideas?

did you try it this way

<add name="CommerceTemplate" connectionString="Data Source=Comp.Name\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=dbname;Trusted_Connection=True;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

hope this helps

Hi,

From your description, it seems that you are using "sa" account to log in your SQLServer, that is to say you have set your SQLServer as "SQL Mixed Authentication mode", right?

Based on the error message, there are two possibilities. First, try to log into your SQLServer by SQLServer Management Studio with the 'sa' account, to see if it can work. If not, I guess the account and password maybe invalid. Second, if you are using Windows Authentication mode, you should also make your connection string looks like:

"data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true"

Thanks.

Connecting to Failover Partner using ODBC and OLE DB

I need to connect to mirrored SQL servers (Developer Edition) using OLE DB, I tried both OLE DB and ODBC, but it doesn't work
I used connection ODBC string:
Driver={SQL Native Client};Server=10.0.1.161;Failover Partner=10.0.1.162;Uid=test;Pwd=test;Database=TestDB
if server 161 is principal and server 162 mirror, it connects ok, but when I exchange server roles, connect fails (the error message is: Cannot open database "TestDB" requested by the login. The login failed. in LOGIN)
the connect string using OLE DB is:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=test;Password=test;Failover Partner=10.0.1.162;Initial Catalog=TestDB;Data Source=10.0.1.161;Use Procedure for Prepare=1;Auto Translate=True;Packet Size=4096;Use Encryption for Data=False;Tag with column collation when possible=False
error message is the same
when I try to connect using VS 2005 using connection string Database=TestDB;User Id=test;Password=test;Server=10.0.1.161;Failover Partner=10.0.1.162, it works OK
i have installed SQL server 2005 (on local - client machine) with SQL Native Client and also
SQL Server service pack 1
Is there any way how to connect from OLE DB?
Thanks

With OLE DB the connection string keyword is 'FailoverPartner' (no space) in the provider string for IDBInitialize::Initialize and 'Failover Partner' (one space) for IDataInitialize::GetDataSource.

With ADO it's 'Failover Partner' (one space) and ODBC it's 'Failover_Partner'

Depending on the method you use to connect, you may be using the wrong keyword.

Mirroring happens per database rather than per server, and covers data (tables and indexes) but not user accounts and access rights. These have to be set up in both databases for failover to work, otherwise you can have a login fail after the servers switch roles if the login does not have access rights in the mirror database.

Connecting to a MSDE server in Internet

Hi !!
I would like to connect to a SQL Server (MSDE edition) that's in Internet,
using Enterprise Manager either Query Analizer. For these I've configured
the client tool as:
Server Alias: INET_SERVER
Net: TCP/IP
Connection parameters:
Server name: [DNS_NAME]\[REMOTE_SERVER_NAME]\[INSTANCE_NAME]
Port number: 1433
Althought I've tried to configure the server name in different ways, I
haven't found the successful way to do it.
I don't think it's a firewall problem. In theory I've successfull disabled.
Thanks !!
Josep.You can check to see if it's a firewall or port blocking issue or not by
using TELNET and seeing if it can connect. Type this from a command
prompt (replace INET_SERVER with your server name).
telnet INET_SERVER 1433
If the telnet session fails to connect, you have a firewall issue or are
not using the correct port or host name - when I try to connect to
something that is blocked by a firewall, the error reported for me was
"could not open connection to the host on port xxxx: Connect failed".
If you get a screen that appears to be the start of the connected
session, you can be sure you have actually opened a port to another
machine. You won't be able to do anything meaningful from this telnet
session, but it rules out firewall, port, or hostname issues. Close it
and use the same settings to connect with Query Analyzer or Enterprise
Manager.
Good luck,
Tony Sebion

Connecting Sql Server Yukon

Folks, i've just installed the express edition and have enabled all the protocols within the COMPUTER MANAGER. When i try connecting the INSTANCE through QA or EM, sql doesn't exist or access denied.
I've installed the default instance.
Please guide.a friend of mine had a similar problem,
check
http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38264|||Hi, sorry for lack of knowledge. Can't i even connect to the db engine through QA. How do i interact with the database?
There is only SQL COMPUTER MANAGER in the Installation Menu.
There isn't any client tool under
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn.

Please guide.|||There are no client tools for SQL Express. QA and EM don't work with it. You can use the command line utility included with it. You can also connect using .NET if you have web matrix or VS.NET.|||Thank you guys.

Connecting SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS EDITION using Server Explorer

Hi all.

I use Visual Studio .NET 2002 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as database.

I try to connect to database using server explorer.

Test connection is OK. When I done with it and click OK, the message prompt that "Unable to connect to database".

So, is it impossible to connect SQL Server 2005 Express Edition using the server explorer?

But, the connection is ok when I connect through code cause I can retrieve and update database.

Hi azrina,

From your description I would guess, are you connecting to your sql express database both from your code and server explorer? and besides, you choose "auto attached" for your database file(.mdf), am I right?

If yes, i would say, well, since sql express use "custom instance" and there is a basic principle that one mdf file cannot be bound to more than 1 instance at the same time, so, if you are accessing your database file from your code, that particular file(say, dbname.mdf file) would be attached to your sql express custom instance. While if now you are connecting to the sql express again from server explorer, probably you will be not able to access that database file --most possibly you will get a "the database file has been already been attached" error.

Anyway, that's just my assumption and I use visual studio 2005 instead of vs.net 2002. And by the way, I've also encountered some kinds of troubles when connecting to my database from server explored--which sometimes I find is hard to descibe and explain.

Just hope my suggestion could help

|||Actually, what I am trying to do is to add database to the server explorer. As I want to use the DataSet, I can just drag and drop the sqlconnection and etc coz vs studio.net tools support the data access using data set. But, I think this version of my Visual Studio .Net does not support the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. What can I do now is just do the data access thru code and not using the tools provided.

hi,

I need to connect to Express edition of sql server installed on my machine, from perl (solaris platform). How should the connection string containing server, port, database etc look like ?

please have a look at connection string samples..

Can any one tell me how to find the *port number* that the local server is using.

you can find the used port via SQL Server Configuration Manager.. select the SQL Server 2005 Network configurations node, which expands in several instances nodes.. select the appropriate instance node.. in the right pane, network protocols will be listed (in order to be available, the desired network protocol must be "enabled")...

select TCP/IP, rx click and access it's properties.. in the IP Addresses tab the used port will be listed.. if dynamic port is set, the instance is configured for dynamic assigned address and this value "could" change at next instance's startup as the instance will try, at it's startup, to get the old used port but it could be relocated to alternative one if the old port has been used (in the meanwhile) by other services.. in case of dynamic assigned ports, the SQL Server Browser, a service listening on port UDP 1434, is required to resolve remote connections..

the SQL Server Browser intercepts incoming connections and, after inspecting the local registry for the dynamic assigned port used by the instance, redirects the remote connection(s) to the appropriate port where the instance is listening on..

|||UsHaving a single instance , use

netstat -a -b at the command prompt and look for the sqlservr.exe process

I could not find Configuration Manager in the management studio... where can I find that.

hi,

Connect to sqlexpress

Hi, I have SQL 2005 developer edition on my laptop. I am wondering if it is
possible to work with databases created for sql express edition. What I mean,
is that I have VS 2005, I created a Personal web site starter kit. The wizard
creates database files in the app_data directory.
So is it possible to connect to this "personal.mdf" while we have the
developer edition and the express edition. If yes, how can we do that
In the web.config I have
connectionString="Data Source=.\sqlexpress;Integrated security=True;User
instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|datadirecor...... ."
Thanks for your help
For security/performance reasons, the dynamic attachment of a MDF file using
the parameter AttachDBFilename in the connection string is only available
with SQL-2005 Express and not with the other editions of SQL-2005.
So you will have to permanently attach the mdf file to the Developer
instance or install an instance of SQL-Express on your machine. You can
have both instances running at the same time but you cannot have the same
mdf file attached to both instances at the same time.

Connect to SQL Server from Workgroup Computer

I have been using Windows XP SP 2 and SQL Server 2000 Developer's edition on
one computer and it has worked fine. For testing, I've installed Query
Analyzer on a 2nd, workgroup computer. I know the network itself is
working. Files and printers are shared and working.
The problem is that ODBC and Query Analyzer on computer 2 cannot connect to
the SQL Server on computer 1.
The message returned is "SQL Server does not exist or access denied".
I suspect SQL Server is not hearing the connection request.
The user name I am using (Windows authentication) is MST, and this name has
a login ( COMP!\MST). When I try to login from computer2, I suppose the
login is COMP2\MST ? At any rate, I cannot add this login to SQL server.
Using SQL authentication, I can log in on computer 1 via Query Analyzer with
a different user name and password, but I receive the message above when I
try to log in via QA from computer 2.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to solving this?
Thanks
Mike Thomas
Solved this one myself, but it does not make much sense.
On the client computer, I opened Client Network Utility and in the Alias >
Edit tab changed the name of the 'Server Alias' to something different from
the 'Server Name'. Now, I can at least connect using SQL Authetication.
Next hurdle is Windows authentication.
