Connecting to a 2005 database using 2000 EM

What are the steps to be able to add a 2005 server to a server group in the
2000 enterprise manager?

You can't do that. You can, however, add a SQL 2000 database to SQL Server
Management Studio (the SQL 2005 replacement for EM.)
